The Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation (PHEF), in cooperation with the Leadership Council of the Pennsylvania Center for Health Careers, created the Nurse Faculty Lines Program to provide a new source of financial support for non-profit, tax exempt schools of nursing, and ultimately for students, in Pennsylvania. The intent of these funds is to enable schools to be creative in their application to show how they would address a proposed new faculty member to expand capacity to enroll nursing students.
In order to increase the capacity of Pennsylvania nursing schools, PHEF will make awards annually to underwrite nursing faculty positions. These faculty lines might involve more than one nursing school, might involve other health care providers, and might be proposed in concert with other programs offered by this Foundation. The initial round of awards will provide $50,000 per line, renewable for a minimum of three years (subject to availability of funds), to increase teaching faculty at an institution. The intent of these awards is to increase the capacity of a program receiving an award to educate nursing students.
An Advisory Committee, composed of six nurse educators from the Pennsylvania higher education community, at least four appointees from the greater health care industry, and one representative from PHEF, will review applications and make a recommendation to the PHEF Board of Directors for final approval. The Board will not be able to approve any proposal that would allow expenditure of funds in a manner that is beyond the Foundation’s charitable purposes.
PHEF has secured donations of over $1 million to begin this program.
